چکیده

Abstract. Sulfate geoengineering (SG) methods based on lower stratospheric tropical injection of sulfur dioxide (SO2) have been widely discussed in recent years, focusing the direct and indirect effects they would climate system. Here a potential alternative method is discussed, where emissions are located at surface or troposphere form carbonyl sulfide (COS) gas. There two time-dependent chemistry–climate model experiments designed from years 2021 to 2055, assuming 40 Tg-Syr-1 artificial global flux COS, which geographically distributed following present-day anthropogenic COS (SG-COS-SRF) 6 upper (SG-COS-TTL). The budget species as both SG-COS strategies sulfate aerosol optical depth (???=0.080 2046–2055), effective radius (0.46 µm), SOx deposition (+8.9 % for SG-COS-SRF; +3.3 SG-COS-TTL), tropopause radiative forcing (RF; ?-1.5 W m?2 all-sky conditions experiments). Indirect ozone, methane water vapour also considered, along with contribution. According our results, resulting net RF ?1.3 m?2, SG-COS-SRF, ?1.5 SG-COS-TTL, it comparable corresponding ?1.7 obtained sustained 4 stratosphere SO2 (SG-SO2, able produce increase depth). Significant changes ozone response found respect SG-SO2 (?5 DU versus +1.4 globally). ultraviolet B (UVB) perturbation accounts ?4.3 annual average (versus ?2.4 case), springtime Antarctic decrease ?2.7 +5.8 experiment). Overall, we find that an may be feasible more latitudinally uniform without need deployment aircraft. However, assumption rate uptake by soils plants does not vary increasing concentrations will investigated future work, studies needed prolonged exposure higher values humans ecosystems.

An Overview of Geoengineering of Climate using Stratospheric Sulfate Aerosols

1 We provide an overview of geoengineering by stratospheric sulfate aerosols. We review the state of understanding 2 about this topic as of early 2008, summarizing the past 30 years of work in the area, and highlight some very recent 3 studies using general circulation models of the atmosphere and ocean, and discuss the efficacy of producing such 4 aerosols by methods used to deliver sulfur spe...

Isotopic Fractionation of Sulfur in Carbonyl Sulfide by Carbonyl Sulfide Hydrolase of Thiobacillus thioparus THI115

Carbonyl sulfide (COS) is one of the major sources of stratospheric sulfate aerosols, which affect the global radiation balance and ozone depletion. COS-degrading microorganisms are ubiquitous in soil and important for the global flux of COS. We examined the sulfur isotopic fractionation during the enzymatic degradation of COS by carbonyl sulfide hydrolase (COSase) from Thiobacillus thioparus T...

Carbonyl sulfide: an inhibitor of inorganic carbon transport in cyanobacteria.

Cells of a high CO(2)-requiring mutant (E(1)) and wild type of Synechococcus PCC7942 were incubated with COS in the light, then suspended in COS-free medium and their CO(2) exchange was measured using an open gas-analysis system under the conditions where photosynthetic CO(2) fixation is inhibited. When the suspension of cells untreated with COS was illuminated, the rate of CO(2) uptake was hig...

Peatland geoengineering: an alternative approach to terrestrial carbon sequestration.

Terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems contribute almost equally to the sequestration of ca 50 per cent of anthropogenic CO(2) emissions, and already play a role in minimizing our impact on Earth's climate. On land, the majority of the sequestered carbon enters soil carbon stores. Almost one-third of that soil carbon can be found in peatlands, an area covering just 2-3% of the Earth's landmass. Pea...
